General Audition Information

Pittsburg Theatre Company auditions are open to all non-AEA performers and we encourage anyone from the community to come audition. Everyone is welcome, new and seasoned performers, all ethnicities, gender identities as well as performers with disabilities. All performers are considered volunteers and casting is non-union.

Actors must be able to portray the ages listed in the provided character descriptions. Auditions are typically held by appointment and scheduled on a show-by-show basis. PTC is proud to have open auditions and cast based on who’s right for the part no matter their ethnicity (unless called upon in the script).

PTC is proud that our company is a supportive environment for everyone to feel safe and share and develop their creative talents, learn some new things and find new friendships. We also continue our firm commitment to having BIPOC/LGBTQ+ representation in cast, creative teams and board, along with tailoring creative processes to the needs of each show.

COVID: PTC currently has no vaccination or testing requirement, though vaccination is recommended. Face masks are optional during auditions and rehearsals. The director may ask you to remove your mask during your audition. Performances and dress rehearsals are performed without the use of face masks for actors. Face masks are optional for crew and audience members. Subject to change based on state and federal mandates.

A Christmas Carol 1939 Auditions

Auditions are held in person and video submissions are accepted as well. Videos must be recieved by Monday September 21, 2026 by 5 pm for considerations.

Tentative schedule – subject to change

What to prepare

• Review “A Christmas Carol” Audition Packet (to be posted soon)
• Select and prepare a monologue of your choice from one of the provided sides. 
• Complete the Audition Application found in the same audition packet and bring with you. 
• Headshot is optional but appreciated.
• Be prepared to do a cold read from the script.

Character Descriptions

This is a current list of characters.
Note: Many characters will be doubled-up and subject to change.

• Jacob Marley (over 60): Marley is dead. Marley serves as the narrator of the story. He was once Scrooge’s business partner, but he died seven years ago and now he returns as a ghost to warn Scrooge of the horrors that await him unless he changes his ways. He appears in grey ghostly tones with chains. He also appears as himself alive in one scene with a quick change back to dead Marley.
• Bob Cratchit (38-50 presenting): Cratchit works for Scrooge. He is a kind and loving family man. Scrooge doesn’t treat Cratchit very well. But Bob doesn’t hold the poor treatment against him because he believes that Scrooge’s life is lonely. What brings sorrow to Cratchit’s life is that his young son, Tiny Tim, is very ill. Since Bob’s doesn’t make enough money, his family cannot afford treatment for Tim. When Scrooge sees their situation during one of the ghostly encounters, he realizes that he must be more generous to his employee and help save Tiny Tim. 
• Mrs. Emily Cratchit (38-50 presenting): The loving, caring and supportive wife of Bob Cratchit. She is not fond of or intimidated by Mr. Scrooge.
• Ebenezer Scrooge (50+): Scrooge is a hard, cold businessman who spends his days counting his profits and wishing the world would leave him alone. He is not charitable and does not believe in Christmas. Scrooge’s life is his business and so he shuts out the world around him, including his nephew.   
• Fred – Scrooge’s Nephew (20-30 presenting): Fred, Scrooge’s nephew (his deceased sister’s son), is poor but very happy. He encourages his uncle to bring joy in his life despite his bitterness towards Christmas.    
• Mary – The Nephew’s wife (20-30 presenting): Young beautiful bride of Scrooge’s nephew.  She is loving and supportive of Fred. Emotionally reserved, and inquisitive. Holds her own against Scrooge. Mary is a journalist.
• Teen Scrooge: Teenage about 17 at school. Bitting, and self hateful.
• Male Actor (mid-20s) 
  • *Prime Scrooge  (mid-20s): Scrooge as a young man getting started and then slightly more refined in the prime of his life. (Doubles as Wallace the boxer)
  • *Wallace– Bob’s boxing opponent (Doubles as Prime Scrooge)
• Fan (late 20s – 40 presenting): Scrooge’s older sister and wife to Mr. Fezziwig. Wears a free loving mask to hide deep trauma.
• Mr. Fezziwig: Fezziwig was Scrooge’s Bashful and generous employer who Scrooge wanted to be like when he was younger. Husband of Fan Scrooge. (Possibly doubles as Christmas Present)
• Ghost of Christmas Present: The Ghost of Christmas Present is a gruff old soul but full of Christmas joy. He is bigger than life, bombastic, and a friendly generous giant who shows Scrooge the errors of his way in present day.  (Possibly doubles as Mr. Fezziwigg) 
• Belle (late 20s – 40 presenting): Belle is the young woman who once loved and was loved by Scrooge. She is beautiful and kind.  
• Male (about 11) 
  • Tiny Tim Cratchit (about 11) : Tiny Tim is Bob Cratchit’s youngest son. He is a lame boy with a soulful nature despite his illness, though feeling isolated. He plays an important role in Scrooge’s change. 
  • Young Boy Scrooge (about 11): (Doubles as Tiny Tim) Innocent, and meek. But emotional once strained.
• Female (17-18 presenting) 
  • Martha Cratchit  The eldest daughter.
  • Ghost of Christmas Past: The Ghost of Christmas Past appears in the forms of a small child. Ideally, this character would be illuminated with lights within its clothing or “glowing.” The ghost is very elegant, alien, yet ethereal. The ghost shows Scrooge his past, and demonstrates how he changed as he grew older and prospered.  
• Female (12-16 presenting) 
  • Belinda Cratchit, the second daughter, always thinks she is second to Martha. (Doubles as School Mate #2)
  • School Mate #2 (12-16 presenting),: Teenage boy (male presenting character) at Scrooge’s school 
• Male (12-16 presenting) 
  • Peter Cratchit, the heir, for whom his father is arranging employment 
  • School Mate #1 (12-16 presenting): Teenage boy at Scrooge’s school.
• Male (8-10 presenting) 
  • Joseph Cratchit: A younger son (Doubles as Ignorance, Beggar Child #1)  
  • Beggar Child #1: Young child (cockney) who begs for money or food on the streets.
  • Ignorance – sickly, innocent child
• Female (8-10 presenting) 
  • Nora Cratchit: – A younger daughter
  • Beggar Child #2: Young child (cockney) who begs for money or food on the streets.
  • Want – sickly, innocent child 
• Male – actor with height  
  • Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come (Future): The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is a dark phantom.  The only part of this ghost that Scrooge sees, beyond his robe, is a hand with which he points at the things Scrooge is to see. This ghost has no lines and is a “vision” projected and then finally appears. (Doubles as voice of Scrooge’s Father) 
  • Scrooge’s Father: A detached bully. (recorded) ((Doubles as Christmas Future)
• Caroler (1): Soprano of a quartet of singers. Precast and *Ele the Elephant – one of the Forty Elephants (aka Forty Thieves)   
• Caroler (2): Soprano of a quartet of singers. Precast *Dilbur – Elephant in training (Scrooge’s maid) 
• Caroler (3): Alto of a quartet of singers. Precast 
• Caroler (4): Alto of a quartet of singers. Precast
