In “A Christmas Carol 1939,” miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, who show him the error of his ways, his lonely future, and the joy he is missing. Through these encounters, Scrooge transforms from a bitter, cold-hearted man into a kind, generous one, embracing the Christmas spirit and the importance of compassion.
This adaptation is set in December 1939 in London, England.

Character Descriptions
This is a complete list of characters.
Note: Many characters will be doubled-up.
- Jacob Marley: Marley is dead. Marley serves as the narrator of the story. He was once Scrooge’s business partner, but he died seven years ago and now he returns as a ghost to warn Scrooge of the horrors that await him unless he changes his ways. He appears in grey ghostly tones with chains.
- Grave Digger #1 (extra no lines, just carries Marley and puts him in coffin and appears at Tim’s funeral at the end)

- Caroler (1): Soprano of a quartet/octet of singers.
- Caroler (2): Alto of a quartet/octet of singers.
- Caroler (3): Tenor of a quartet/octet of singers.
- Caroler (4): Bass of a quartet/octet of singers.
- Bob Cratchit: Cratchit works for Scrooge. He is a kind and loving family man. Scrooge doesn’t treat Cratchit very well. But Bob doesn’t hold the poor treatment against him because he believes that Scrooge’s life is lonely. What brings sorrow to Cratchit’s life is that his young son, Tiny Tim, is very ill. Since Bob’s doesn’t make enough money, his family cannot afford treatment for Tim. When Scrooge sees their situation during one of the ghostly encounters, he realizes that he must be more generous to his employee and help save Tiny Tim.
- Mrs. Emily Cratchit: The loving, caring and supportive wife of Bob Cratchit. She is not fond of or intimidated by Mr. Scrooge. This character sing an original lullaby acapella.
- Ebenezer Scrooge: Scrooge is a hard, cold businessman who spends his days counting his profits and wishing the world would leave him alone. He is not charitable and does not believe in Christmas. Scrooge’s life is his business and so he shuts out the world around him, including his nephew.
- Fred – Scrooge’s Nephew: Fred, Scrooge’s nephew (his deceased sister’s son), is poor but very happy. He encourages his uncle to bring joy in his life despite his bitterness towards Christmas.
- Mary – The Nephew’s wife: Young beautiful bride of Scrooge’s nephew. She is loving and supportive of Fred. Holds her own against Mr. Scrooge.
- Beggar Child #1 – Jim: Young child (cockney) who begs for money or food on the streets.
- Beggar Child #2 – Henson: Young child (cockney) who begs for money or food on the streets.
- Ghost of Christmas Past: The Ghost of Christmas Past appears in the forms of a small child. Ideally, this character would be illuminated with lights within its clothing or “glowing.” The ghost is very elegant, innocent, yet ethereal. The ghost shows Scrooge his past, and demonstrates how he changed as he grew older and prospered.

- Young Boy Scrooge: about 10

- School Mate #1: Teenage boy at Scrooge’s school.
- School Mate #2: Teenage boy at Scrooge’s school
- Teen Scrooge: about 15-17
- Young Fan: (10 or under) Ebenezer’s younger sister whom he loved dearly but who died young. She was the mother of Ebenezer’s nephew, his only living relative. She appears as a young girl full of life and love.
- Young Man Scrooge/Prime Scrooge: Scrooge as a young man getting started and then slightly more refined in the prime of his life.
- Mr. Fezziwig: Fezziwig was Scrooge’s kind and generous employer who Scrooge wanted to be like when he was younger.
- Mrs. Fezziwig: Mr. Fezziwig’s wife (extra – no lines)
- Belle: Belle is the young woman who once loved and was loved by Scrooge. She is beautiful and kind.
- Ghost of Christmas Present: The Ghost of Christmas Present is a gruff old soul but full of Christmas joy. He is bigger than life, bombastic, and a friendly generous giant who shows Scrooge the errors of his way in present day.
- Thief #1: Street hustler and store thief.
- Thief #2: Street hustler and store thief.
- Tiny Tim Cratchit: Tiny Tim is Bob Cratchit’s youngest son. He is a lame boy with a cheerful nature despite his illness. He plays an important role in Scrooge’s change.
- Friend #1 – Male – Friend of Fred & Mary’s at their Christmas dinner party.
- Friend #2 – Female – Friend of Fred & Mary’s at their Christmas dinner party.
- Martha Cratchit, the eldest daughter, who works as an apprentice at a milliner’s
- Belinda Cratchit, the second daughter, always thinks she is second to Martha.
- Peter Cratchit, the heir, for whom his father is arranging employment
- Unnamed Cratchit Son – An unnamed younger son
- Unnamed Cratchit Daughter – An unnamed younger daughter
- Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come (Future): The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is a dark phantom. The only part of this ghost that Scrooge sees, beyond his black robe, is a hand with which he points at the things Scrooge is to see. This ghost has no lines but conveys an ominous presence.
- Minister: presides over Tim’s funeral
